Working at City rising Farm has been a terrific experience for me.  Although it has been quite a challenge adjusting to the environment the staff and my peers are very friendly.

Come join the movement as we help keep our community clean and witness the beautiful plants, fruits and vegetables that City Rising Farm presents for the public.

My first experience working at the Blaine Avenue Community Garden was good.  This is my first time having a job and at first I was very nervous.  I really did not know what to expect but my co-workers were really nice and so were my supervisors Ms. Elle and Leah.

On the first day we got a chance to get to learn about City Rising Farm and the Blaine Avenue Community Garden.  We also got a chance to plant celery, tomatoes, peppers and broccoli.

On my second day at work we built flower beds as a team.  We also planted collard greens, potatoes and more celery and peppers.

Wednesday we did not attend work because of the weather.  One my third day of work we recreated two gardens.  We planted okra, cauliflower, flowers and broccoli.  We also broke down some raised beds so that we could use the top soil for the new beds.

As a team everyone seems to get along pretty well! We are creating a strong bond as a team day by day.

On my fourth day at work we continued to take beds down and did some weeding and pulling up vegetables (harvesting) that were done.

I am really excited about working in this garden for the next couple of weeks!

At City Rising Farm we planted sweet potatoes and lettuce.  After working we are able to go to the Hough Library for the lunch program.  We also go to the library for part of the day where we work on our stories for the website.  I want to get out of this how to work a real job.  I want to be able to get all of the knowledge there is of gardening from my job this summer.

For my first three days of work City Rising Farm has been a great experience. My staff and peers are very great, mainly Alvis who has been a great friend, feels like I knew him all my life.  Then there’s Johnteze, he is extra funny, wearing a sweater and jean jacket in 90 degree weather.

Well now there’s Keisha who is great, always making us laugh or happy and I met all of these people because of working at City Rising Farm.

Today we had a bunch of fun.  I liked  it all except for touching that alpaca manure.  I just love City Rising Farm although I am tired of seeing slugs.  I’m terrified of bugs and today we also found a snake, but I didn’t touch t because I hate slimy things and things that crawl or slither.

On my first day on the job heat burning on my skin after searching for the work site on the farm I met our supervisor Ms. Elle and on that farm the plants and trees were tall and full of berries.  There were plants and beautiful flowers.  After looking around I was introduced to my co-workers Alvis and Michael and our other supervisor Leah.

I then got to work planting tomatoes, collard greens, cabbage, flowers and lots of other stuff.  Even though I was mad because of my shoes getting messed up I was cool because I met some pretty cool people and I learned new things!

My first week in the garden was cool because when I first came to the garden I was nervous.  I was nervous because I really don’t like meeting new people but when we started working together as a team I thought, “They aren’t so bad, they are cool for real.  Meeting new people is not always a bad thing!”

It’s good that I met these new people because everybody is cool with each other and are experiencing new material because it’s the first time we are working on a farm.

I have had other experiences working in my mother’s garden putting down soils and planting flowers.  My new experience is planting food.  I haven’t ever planted fruit or vegetables but at City rising Farm I have planted tomatoes, cabbage and peppers.  We made some garden beds out of newspaper, wood chips, and composted alpaca manure and then topped it off with some top soil.

City Rising Farm is cool because I’m just doing stuff I use at my mother’s garden and also learning some new stuff!
